The Indian Institutes of Technology are autonomous institutes, officially
declared as the ‘Institutes of National Importance' since 1961. The IITs are
governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The Human Resource Development Minister, currently Prakash Jawadekar is the ex-officio Chairperson of IIT Council. There are a total
number of 23 IITs across the country and provides nearly 11 thousand seats to the
engineering aspirants.
